Welcome to Amnesty at GWU

GW Amnesty International is a student-led chapter of the international organization that advocates for human rights and the protection of justice, freedom, truth, and dignity around the world. With more than 2.2 million supporters, activists and volunteers in over 150 countries, and complete independence from government, corporate or national interests, we work to protect human rights worldwide. The organization works to investigate and expose abuses, educate and mobilize the public, and help transform societies to create a safer, more just world.

By raising awareness of global issues, GW Amnesty International is preparing a forthcoming generation of academics with the essential background knowledge to better understand and respect the world’s distinct social and political environments. We believe that human rights abuses anywhere are the concern of people everywhere.

A Message from Amnesty’s President:

I am so glad to see that you’ve found our completely new website, that will be constantly updated featuring information about key issues, events, leaders, how to get involved, etc. The website for our org was long overdue

Amnesty has a fantastic team of leaders for the 2009-2010 school year that will be key players in making our organization more important and more relevant on campus. We will be focusing on services for our members, awareness building on campus, contact with the regional Amnesty office as well as with other chapters, etc. In order to achieve these stronger bonds with our community, our org will be refocusing on the issues themselves which motivate and interest us to do the work that we do.

I am passionate about the fundamental human component to our organization. Amnesty believes in a fundamental principle that every human being deserves basic rights and dignities, set down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These rights are not specific to one culture, race, or people, but cross all of these boundaries. I believe in the fight for human rights, the fight against ignorance, tyranny, oppression.

Amnesty helps me to get beyond the Washington bubble, the Washington politics, and to realize that there is a vast world that cannot imagine the rights and freedoms we enjoy.

By arming ourselves with knowledge in our work on campus, we will always be better equipped in the world. At a school as internationally minded as GW, the work that students do now will stay with them as they enter various careers and try to change the world.

Amnesty helps me to get beyond the Washington bubble, the Washington politics, and to realize that there is a vast world that cannot imagine the rights and freedoms we enjoy. It keeps me grounded and committed to advocating for those people, believing that they deserve these simple dignities.

I encourage you to get involved. Join our list-serv, come to a meeting or an event. We have a great group in our organization, and with your help we can make 2009-2010 a fantastic year.

Best,
Michael T. Mort
